Life of Pi
Ang Lee, director of the film Life of Pi, is in India for the first time to promote his upcoming 3D venture. He says the film, which is based on Yann Martel's book of the same name, is "a thought-provoking novel".
The Taiwanese-born American director, who is 58, said he had an adventurous time shooting some portions of the movie in India and insists that there is no gain without pain.
In the film, Indian boy Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma) is stranded in the Pacific Ocean after the ship carrying his family and animals on their journey to Canada is sunk by a storm. He survives on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker for 227 days.
After the disaster, Pi discovers that God has a plan for him and believes in the power of faith. He also comes to terms with his grief over the deaths of his father, mother and brother and realizes that his fear of the tiger is a reason to live.
The director chose Munnar, a tea-growing region in Kerala to shoot the film's opening sequence. The soaring hills and verdant beauty of the tea gardens have been magnificently captured in the sequence.
According to the tourism ministry, it plans to capitalize on the locations used in the film for boosting regional tourism. It will run competitions to win trips to Pondicherry and Munnar.
The film has been highly praised for its dramatic storytelling and emotional depth. It is based on the book by Yann Martel that won the 2002 Man Booker Prize for fiction. It has been seen in films like 'Life of Pi', 'Nishabd' and 'Mistress of Spices' among many others.
The 'God's Own Country' is known for its natural beauty that includes sprawling tea gardens, enchanting waterfalls, crystal clear lakes and majestic colonial bungalows. Its picturesque backdrop has helped filmmakers to create numerous romantic movies that have infused the magic of this magical land in their cinematic visions.
Several Bollywood films have shot scenes in and around Munnar such as Jab We Met, Highway, DDLJ, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer 'Mistress of Spices', Oscar-winning 'Life of Pi' and 'Nishabd' among many others. Chennai Express is a romantic comedy directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Gauri Khan under Red Chillies Entertainment. It stars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. The movie is about a Punjabi man on a mission to immerse his grandfather's ashes down South & he meets a Tamilian girl.
Though 'Chennai Express' is not a perfect film, it manages to be entertaining. The Screenplay written by Yunus Sajawal is quite good & the humor at most times hits the right notes. The movie also has some great action-packed moments.
However, the storyline of the movie is a bit predictable and there are too many songs that are woven in the narrative which hardly adds any value to the film. The film is a blend of Hindi and Tamil language which makes it hard for non-tamil speakers to understand the language. Moreover, the movie is full of stereotypes and over acting by the actors. The beauty of Munnar has made it the perfect place for Bollywood films and the most recent film to be shot here is 'Nishabd'. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Jiah Khan and was directed by Ram Gopal Varma.
Although the first half is engrossing, the movie suffers from a few drawbacks. The director tries to group love and lust together, which isn't a good idea.
He also focuses too much on the camera angles, slow motions and high-pitched sounds. This is a shame because the cinematography and background score are great.
But the real reason to watch this film is to see the performances of all the actors. Big B and Jiah Khan deliver excellent performances, while the rest of the cast do well too.
Nishabd is a melodrama and it won't answer any questions for you, but it will give you an emotional ride. It isn't as good as Lolita, but it is better than Cheeni Kum, and it will leave you with a good feeling. Enjoy the best Places to visit in Munnar. Live in the Best hotel in Munnar.
